I hear you man! I'm in the same boat as you (no pun intended), and that is why I desperately want to take intro to digital painting. I actually like second one more than the last one. When I'm doing digital painting, I always find the in between stage look the best. I think it leaves the viewer room to connect the dots rather than spoon feed the viewer with a finish refined painting. So the trick is really knowing at what stage to stop. At any rate, I like the composition a lot and your line art is lookin' real fine!
